Book Study at The Gatehouse hosted by the Catskill Regional Teacher Center

Join area teachers in a discussion on the impact of race in our schools and communities, based on the book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? Dr. Waid will lead a conversation on how to navigate difficult discussions with students, families, and community members in a five sessions series starting Saturday April 18th through Saturday May 16th. The study group will meet in the lounge at The Gatehouse.

Teachers may contact the Catskill Regional Teacher Center to request a copy of the book. Non-teaching participants are asked to obtain their own copies.

About the book:

Tatum examines how racial identity develops for Black, White, and other students, and how those developmental processes shape peer groups, classroom climate, and academic engagement. She argues that avoiding conversations about race does not reduce tension; it prevents us from understanding our students' lived realities and from interrupting patterns of inequity in schools.

What participants will do:

Read and discuss selected chapters using guided protocols and reflection questions.

Explore how racial identity and systemic racism show up in daily school life (curriculum, discipline, relationships, expectations).

Examine current practices through an equity lens and identify barriers and opportunities for change.

Develop at least one actionable step to strengthen safety, connection, and voice for students across racial and ethnic groups.

Why this learning matters:

Patterns of self-segregation, opportunity gaps, and racialized outcomes remain a reality in schools across the country. This study offers research, language, and tools to help educators respond with courage and skill, moving beyond silence or defensiveness toward more intentional, identity-affirming practice.

About the facilitator:

Dr. Nicole Waid of SUNY Oneonta brings experience in teacher education and equity-focused practice and will support participants in creating a brave space for dialogue. She will model strategies for facilitating difficult conversations that educators can adapt for their own classrooms, teams, and communities.

Sacred Writing Circle with Gianluca Avanzato

Sacred Writing Circle with Gianluca Avanzato

Sacred Writing Circle: Dear Mother

In this Sacred Writing Circle, we’ll reflect on our mothers—biological, adoptive, chosen, spiritual, and more. Through guided meditations, creative writing exercises, and open-hearted sharing, we’ll co-create a supportive and generative space to write about the mothers in our lives: the mothers we have or had, the mothers we lost or found, the mothers we needed or still need. Rooted in personal storytelling and inspired by the world’s spiritual traditions, this Sacred Writing Circle is an invitation to sit with the range of experiences, emotions, and memories invoked by the phrase, “Dear Mother.”

This Sacred Writing Circle is facilitated by Gianluca Avanzato, a writer, artist, musician, and teacher from Oneonta, New York who holds a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School and a Diploma in Interreligious Studies. In his work, including 1:1 creativity coaching, Gianluca emphasizes process over product, transformation over transaction, and fluidity over forcefulness.

Everyone is welcome: no religious/spiritual affiliation nor creative writing experience necessary. A warm welcome to LGBTQIA+ folks as well as those who have felt left out or cast out by traditional religious institutions.

Please note: This Sacred Writing Circle is a gathering for creativity, connection, and conversation. This is not a therapy group and will not be facilitated as a clinical or therapeutic service.

Spring Plant Walk with AC Hill
May

Spring Plant Walk with AC Hill

Local herbalist and herb farmer, AC Hill is back at The Gatehouse for our first plant walk of the season!

Meet at the shop to grab a delicious beverage and meet the fellow plant walkers before embarking on a journey around the block to discover the plants that are popping this spring. We will likely see some edible spring greens that can make a delicious stir fry or frittata such as nettle, dandelion, chickweed, cleavers, garlic mustard, and more. Perhaps some spring flowers will be making a show for us.

AC will share her stories and knowledge about the plants medicinal and edible uses, and help you to be able to recognize it again in your own yard. If you love to learn about plants or share your own knowledge about them, please join AC and The Gatehouse crew for this fun and interactive experience.

Dress for the weather, if it's raining we can take a shorter walk, gathering some plants along the way and bring them back to The Gatehouse to discuss further in the dry space.

This is a sliding scale $10-$20 donation based class, no one turned away for lack of funds (NOTAFLOF)

AC Hill (she/her) is an herbalist, farmer, and teacher growing herbs to make into herbal remedies at her small herb farm in West Edmeston, NY about 25 minutes from the Gatehouse. She sells her high quality herbal products at the Cooperstown Farmers market every Saturday under the name Traveling Herb Farmer. AC loves teaching hand on medicine making classes, leading plant walks and running her online herb school, The Actaea Institute of Herbal Medicine and Aromatherapy which offers some online workshops as well as an 8 month diploma program. She and her husband Isaac Hill host the Plant Cunning Podcast where they have interviewed some of the most influential herbalists, gardeners and spiritual practitioners in the world. They have an in-person conference at their farm July 24-26, 2026 called the Plant Cunning Conference. Visit PlantCunningConference.com to learn more about that and TravelingHerbFarmer.com for product info.

Lyrical Sounds: An Offering of Poetry and Contrabass
May

Lyrical Sounds: An Offering of Poetry and Contrabass

Lyrical Sounds: An Offering of Poetry and Contrabass is a dynamic, collaborative performance where music and poetry unfold together in real time. As a poem is read, bassist Evan Jagels responds intuitively—layering tone, rhythm, and movement beneath the words, echoing their emotion and shaping the atmosphere in the moment. The result is a conversation between sound and language, where no two performances are ever quite the same.

Poets from the Bright Hill Press and Literary Center in Treadwell, NY will be reading, including Bright Hill founder, Bertha Rogers.  A longstanding force in the regional literary community, Bright Hill has fostered generations of writers and continues to be a vibrant space for creative expression.

Evan Jagels is a versatile upright and electric bassist, producer, educator, and Recording Academy voting member whose career has taken him from Carnegie Hall to international stages. He has performed alongside acclaimed artists including Ray Vega, Antonio Hart, and four-time Grammy-winning cellist Eugene Friesen, and recorded with a wide range of influential musicians across genres.

Join us Friday, May 22 from 4–6 PM for this immersive performance celebrating the natural interplay between spoken word and live music.
